Putting disaster recovery centre stage

Disaster Relief Australia

Disaster Relief Australia (DRA) is Australia’s leading non-profit disaster recovery organisation. As one of the federal government’s key partners, DRA primarily operates in the wake of disaster, deploying its army of volunteers to communities that have been hit hardest by extreme weather events.

Despite having led over 185 disaster recovery operations in the last 10 years, DRA is still a young organisation by category standards. With an ambitious government-supported volunteer uplift project underway, our latest campaign finds its focus at the top of the funnel, building awareness for DRA as a volunteer-powered disaster recovery organisation.

Concept: a harbinger of better days

For people devastated by disaster, the first glimpse of DRA’s blue shirts marks a turning point in their journey. Fuelled by the compassion and grit of the volunteers who wear them, DRA’s blue shirts are an immediate comfort. They’re a sign that help is here and recovery starts now.

Building from this insight, we set out to position DRA as the visible turning point in people’s experience of disaster; a right-turn onto the road of recovery.

Portraits of compassion

To bring this idea to life, we centred the campaign on DRA’s real volunteers: the everyday people who give their time and energy to help disaster-stricken communities get back on their feet. Each execution places a volunteer front and centre as the catalyst that makes recovery possible.

Behind them, a backdrop holds two moments at once: the raw aftermath of disaster and the blue skies of recovery; the before and the after, together in the same visual field.

Drawing on the language of classic formal portraiture, we constructed these fused scenes as physical backdrops, framing each volunteer with a natural sense of weight and presence, as light, shadow, and texture fall naturally.

The campaign rolled out across out-of-home and digital channels, introducing DRA to a broader audience and building recognition as a volunteer-powered force for good in disaster recovery.
